This whole “interpretation” and “analysis” is flawed, at best. The image is intended to be a metaphor/social commentary for our systems in education that are predicated on fair and equal rather than responsive and equitable. Each individual represents the diversity in the system and how it is designed to be “equal” in many cases, which is not equitable or responsive. Using a slope as a counter misses the larger point, since the fence design could just be modified to accomplish the exact same inequity. In order to provide truly equitable learning experiences the fence needs to be removed completely “liberation” so that the existing barriers do not require modifications or accommodations in the first place. My redesign of this graphic includes a fourth panel in which it is tagged Transformation and prior to the Equity panel I tell a story of how many are systematically denied access to the game. If you want to add race to the issue with this then first look at the status quo systems that create the barriers and inequities in the first place. Then we can look at how to systematically remove or destroy them.
